The annual UITP MENA seminar in Maghreb region will be held in Casablanca on 31 January 2018 and will allow sharing the experiences in mobility of North Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Sub-Saharan African. The event will be an opportunity for the diverse actors of the public transport in these regions to exchange on their experiences and on the future projects related to policies, planning and innovations for sustainable urban mobility.
The Moroccan experiences and challenges in terms of urban mobility will be introduced during the first session. Following the innovative governance model through the “Support Fund for Public Transportation Reform”, serval public transport systems were opened (Rabat ad Casablanca tramway and Marrakesh electric BRT project) and other projects are planned.
While the Fund supports the deficit of the first three years of operating, municipalities are looking for additional incomes. These reflections will also be presented.

In addition to the structural projects of rail (high-speed train and tramway systems), the bus sector expands in Morocco. Indeed, the BRT projects are taking shape and an ambition to renew the fleet of bus vehicles in Moroccan metropolises is present.
This year, the UITP MENA Seminar will welcome public transport actors from sub-Saharan Africa who are members of the African Organizing Authorities Platform. This initiative will allow improving the knowledge sharing opportunities and establishing a wider base to international best practice on public transport financing, organization, schemes of public transport governance and sharing of responsibilities.

The experiences of the Middle East and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in terms of innovations and technologies are good practices for the African continent to reduce investment costs and enhance the traveler’s public transport experience. Speakers from these regions and MENA CTE representatives will present lessons learnt to their environments.
